In the old Murray Johnston Menswear storefront Judith A. Mason, Ramune Luminare and Leslie Menagh touched down in time for the OshawaSpaceInvaders opening. Judith, an original Artfest artist and member of the Iris Group along with her two intergalactic collaborators ask," What's your Fear in 2013?" An appropriate way to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Orson Welles' 1938 broadcast of War of the Worlds complete with the recorded soundtrack that had Americans in a state of panic. Would the same panic hit Oshawa? The only panic was trying to catch all the art on display before it expired Sept. 28th. (Luckily UOIT allowed Space 20 to extend itself until Oct. 14th)
Ramune and Judith previously collaborated on Outsiders 2012, a large installation/performance project for Nuit Blanche.
Throughout the duration of OshawaSpaceInvaders many of these figures were let loose to travel through the downtown - destination unknown. They have been spotted in different stores and bars. You may still come across them when you least expect it.
Judith and Ramune held a successful workshop for Culture Days at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery on September 28th. (See Space 19 to view photo gallery.)
Ramune trained in sculpture and ceramics and now focuses on drawing, writing and sculpture as her primary media. She has shown her work in public galleries and museums in Ontario, Quebec, England and Norway. Before becoming a fine artist Ramune worked in publishing as a writer, editor and art director of photography, as well as a television scriptwriter and producer. She now splits her time between her studio-home in the woods of Ontario, London England, and India where she works as a volunteer in a children's home.
A recent graduate of NSCAD University in Nova Scotia, Leslie is an interdisciplinary artist, responsible for the soundscape which accompanies The Space Invaders. Leslie works with sound, video and sculpture and makes costumes for theatre and film as well as custom-made undergarments. The rest of her time is spent arranging house concerts, hosting art events and playing with rescue dogs.
